You’ve heard this before, but let me reiterate that yes, every business should be on social media. The problem most businesses face with social media is (1) they’re not sure where to begin with choosing a platform – with the expansive plethora of social media platforms and options available, and (2) the how, what and when of posting guidelines.
Implementing social media campaigns can be time consuming and if done incorrectly can be costly. You need to take that time and make your social media marketing as efficient as possible.
With this in mind here are my top 5 answers to the most frequently questions I receive as a social media manager:
1. Which Social Media Platforms Should I Be On?
The answer is a simple, go where your target market is most likely to be on the web. Each social platform has a culture and demographic of its own; and you’ve got to do a bit of research first to be very clear about who you want to target. Pinterest, although very popular, is appealing mostly to women because it’s very visual so, a plumber with pictures of dirty pipes probably won’t fare well. Get the point?
2. Do My Social Media Pages Need To Look Consistent?
The answer is,absolutely yes. Social media marketing is an excellent way to build your branding on the web and having each social platform with the consistent look and feel of your website is always a good way to go. This means using similar colors, images and messaging.
3. What Do I Post?
Think of posting as a way of communicating with your target audience. What do you think your audience wants to see? You may need to educate your audience on your products and services. Sometimes you may need to reinforce the fact that your products and services are better than your competition. And you should always be clear on the benefits of using your products and services. People tend to buy based on benefits and out of emotion. They want to know if you can fix their problem. Therefore, you should add a mix of fun, educational and uplifting posts mixed in with posts about your services, products, discounts or specials. Aim for an 80/20 mix. Only 20% of your posts should be about sales. And definitely include video.
4. How Often Should I Post?
Many times, this will depend on the social platform you choose. There is a difference in how people engage on Twitter as compared to Facebook, or LinkedIn, etc. Once you decide who your target audience is and what platforms they most likely engage with, then your social media manager can help you decide how often to post to get you closer to your social media marketing goals. There are recommended posting times and days for each platform.
5. What Is The Best Time To Post?
Once again, it depends. Your social media manager can help you determine the best times to post for your target audience and the platforms you’ve chosen. You may need to give it 30-60 days to gather enough data, but most platforms will have back-end insights to help you determine who, when and how often your audience is engaging with your posts. If you need a deeper dive into your analytics, your social media manager can help.
These are just a few of the top questions I hear each time I meet with a new client. The world of social media can be both exciting and confusing.
But one thing is clear for everyone. Once you have decided on your social media marketing goals then you must have a social media marketing strategy to be successful. Otherwise, you could be wasting time and money on a marketing strategy that isn’t beneficial to your business.
